4 Things I Learnt Going Vegan

So last month I  made a decision to go vegan for a month.

I did it mostly as a fast. I wanted to honour God by deciding to discipline my flesh and take the time to spend more time in His presence than I usually do. For one month, I made most of my meals from scratch (eating mostly vegetables and fruits) and I woke up at 6am on most mornings, went to a small room in my house and spent time with Jesus.

Was it hard? Not really, because when I make a decision to honour God with something I believe that HE gives me the desire and power to go through with that thing (Phillipians 2:13)

Here’s What I Learnt;

  • Our flesh controls us a lot more than we think

‘You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you

Romans 8:9

As Christians we are to live in constant awareness that the Holy Spirit lives in us. When you find yourself submitting  to every single emotion (anger, hunger, loneliness, lust), then it might  be time too fast. I was really able to pause and say to myself, are you really hungry? or just bored.  I also found myself reacting a lot less slower when people got me angry or did something that hurt me. During my fasting season, I was able to say no to my ‘flesh’ and really focus instead on allowing the Holy Spirit within me to respond.

  • I had NO period pain or bloating; literally nothing!

I’ve always known that what we eat affects our menstrual cycle but I was so surprised when that time of the month came around and I literally had no period symptoms. No bloating, no breakouts, no pain, nothing. My flow was also super light. Eating healthy food makes a difference guys. If this isn’t proof enough then I don’t know what else will be!

  • I felt a lot lighter but I didn’t actually lose any weight

My body felt so good and so light. All of the food I was eating was digesting really well and I could feel it. You know how sometimes you wake up and feel a bit bloated after eating late at night? Yeah, I didn’t get that feeling even when I ate just before I went to bed. Typically, I'm a big eater. I'm healthy 90% of the time but I eat a lot. Being vegan meant I was eating a lot of jasmine rice, potatoes, brown rice pasta, vegetables, gluten free oats, pitta bread and hummus (I had A LOT of this). Most of these foods are carb heavy and it’s easy to make the mistake of thinking they’ll make you feel heavy or put on weight,  but it was the exact opposite! I didn’t lose any weight but my body got leaner.

  • I learnt how to manage my time and money

Because I was cooking most of my meals from scratch I really had to manage my time properly to avoid starving myself haha. I would go grocery shopping during the weekends and cook things like sweet potatoes and jasmine rice to put in the fridge. I love fresh food, lol and lucky for me cooking vegetables and tomatoes sauces etc. without any meat and chicken is super quick and easy!

I really want to start posting some vegan recipes here for you guys! Please pray that God gives more strength and zeal to do it.
